Madagascar
Madagascar, lying 400 kilometers off the east African
coast in the Indian Ocean, is the world’s fourth largest
island, and home to the world’s richest untapped seams
of Sapphire and ruby.
Madagascar has become a powerhouse for gemstones, in particular corundum. It is speculated to be the richest
place in the world for gemstones, and is considered
by many professionals involved in the gem industry to
be the future of the corundum industry. Madagascar is
now producing some of the best quality Sapphire, and
in such quantities and sizes that it offers first-rate
alternatives to Sri Lankan Sapphire at a fraction of
the price. It is estimated that Madagascar now produces
an estimated 50% of world’s Sapphire.
Some of the main Sapphire mining areas in Madagascar
are Ilakaka, Anivorano and Sakara.
