Australia
has undeservedly earned itself the title as a source
of poor quality Sapphire. However, Australia's mines located
in New South Wales and Central Queensland, have been
one of the world’s most prolific sources of Blue Sapphire these last 150 years.
Sapphire was discovered in Central Queensland about
125 years ago not far from Retreat Creek where it has
been mined ever since. The earliest mining was by hand
and included mining conducted by emissaries of the Russian
Czars, providing many of the gems for the lavish Czarist
crown jewels.
