In its natural state Sapphire is termed as being rough. Depending on its quality, gem standard Sapphire can go one of two ways: highly included Sapphire goes to be cut ‘En Cabochon’ or as beads, higher quality gem material goes to get faceted. Once it has been cut it is termed as being faceted : a facet is one cut. A well-cut faceted gemstone reflects light back evenly across its surface area when held face up.

The brilliance of a cut depends on the luster and the initial clarity of the gemstone: whether or not it had many visible inclusions.

The objective of a good cutter is to optimize a gems beauty, desirability and value. A good, well-proportioned cut will bring out the true potential of a Sapphire. Paramount is the skill of the cutter and his knowledge of positioning and angling facets, so light reflects internally to produce what is termed ‘Maximum Brilliance’.

Cutting standards are far more relaxed for colored gemstones than for diamonds. Most Sapphire is faceted overseas, producing what the trade calls ‘Native cuts.’ Dealers here often have to recut off-center, which produces asymmetrical gems.

A Sapphire’s cut comes down to personal preference. Most Sapphire is fashioned as oval, emerald, round cut and cushion-cuts.

Sometimes highly included Sapphire exhibits a star effect known as ‘Asterism’, this effect is enhanced when a gemstone is cut and polished ‘En Cabochon’: a dome cut with a flat bottom. The ‘Asterism’ effect is caused by two or more sets of tiny parallel inclusions, known as ‘Rutile’ or ‘Silk’, running the internal length of the gem and intersecting at differing angles with each other causing the reflected light to form a star like formation across the gems face. Star Sapphire is stunning and quite rare commanding prices comparable with faceted Sapphire.

A Sapphire possesses excellent hardness, achieving a hardness of 9 out of 10 on the Moh’s Scale, and brilliant sub-adamantine luster.
