Color Facts

The determining factors that give a gemstone its quality and value are made according to the rules of the "4 Cs": Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight.

The crystalline variety of the colorless mineral corundum, Blue Sapphire derives its vivid coloration from the combination of iron and titanium impurities present in corundum. The ruby, sister gem to the Blue Sapphire also a crystalline variety of corundum, gets its red coloration from chromium. Only red corundum may be named Ruby, any other color is called Sapphire.

Diverse equilibriums and combinations of iron, titanium, chromium, vanadium, and manganese create additional colors in Sapphire. Green Sapphire is mostly formed by trace amounts of iron, Pink Sapphire is mainly created by traces of manganese.

Gem quality corundum suitable for jewelry is rare, because of this Sapphire and ruby command prices amongst the highest in the world of gemstones. Between the two, the ruby is more expensive as it occupies a much smaller proportion of corundum’s color spectrum, with the rest being appropriated to Sapphire’s blue and ‘Fancy’ colors. For this reason Sapphire offers some of the best value available in the world of precious gemstones.

When stated without color prefixes the word Sapphire is usually used to refer to the blue variety of the precious gemstone. Sapphires stated with a color prefix, pink, yellow, green etc. are known collectively as ‘Fancy Sapphire.’

Blue Sapphire

Aside from the extremely rare ‘Padparadscha Sapphire’, Blue Sapphire is regarded as the most desirable and expensive of the entire Sapphire consortium. The spectrum of blues that emanate from Sapphire vary from light pastel to dark intensity, but of all these nuances the intensely colored mid-range of cornflower and royal blues are the most coveted. Unfortunately, these majestic tones can cost a king’s ransom, with the more extreme paler and darker tones frequently offering significantly better value for money.

Blue Sapphire

By tradition the most popular of all gem types to exhibit this optical phenomenon, a good quality Star Sapphire can display a six or even twelve-rayed star across its surface.

Color change Sapphire possesses a unique light phenomenon where the gemstone will reflect back different colors under different light sources. Under natural light they may appear bright blue, but under interior artificial light they may turn violet like fine amethyst. It should be noted that unlike Alexandrite, Color Change Sapphire may occur in other colors including green to red. Color Change Sapphire originates from the ‘Mogok Stone Tract’ in Burma and from ‘The Great Rift Valley’ in Eastern Africa.
