The
objective of a good cutter is to optimize a
gems
beauty, desirability and value.
Topaz
is not one of the most expensive
gems,
so cutters can spotlight the beauty more than weight
retention. Meaning that superior cutting, proportions
and symmetry can be bought at very affordable prices.
However, cutting standards are far more relaxed for
colored
gemstones
than for diamonds, and most
Topaz is faceted overseas
producing what the trade calls ‘Native cuts.’ Dealers
here often have to recut off-center, which produces
asymmetrical
gems.
With this in mind it is advised that you stay away from
malformed native cut
Topaz,
except if they are cheap enough to recut later in better
proportions.
