The United Republic of Tanzania

Unlike many gemstone claims Tanzanite’s rarity is assured, heralding from only one source on the face of the Earth: the Merelani Hills in northern Tanzania.

The United Republic of Tanzania is situated in Eastern Africa, bordering the Indian Ocean, between Kenya and Mozambique. The Merelani mining area is situated in the Simanjiro district of Tanzania, 70km south east of Arusha and the world famous gem deposits of the Umba Valley. This area is home to Mount Kilimanjaro the highest point in Africa. Tanzania is a land of wide-open spaces and magnificent wildlife, dwelling in the infamous Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater national parks that cover nearly a quarter of Africa’s landmass.

The eastern part of Africa belongs to the ‘Great Rift Valley,’ which was first formed when the drifting landmasses of Africa and Eurasia collided nearly 25 million years ago. These vast moving landmasses are referred to as ‘Tectonic Plates.’ 550 million years before this a similar geological phenomenon, although on a smaller scale, took place within what is now the ‘Great Rift Valley.’ This was the collision of plates that created the ‘Mozambique Orogenic Belt,’ which resulted in the formation of mountain ranges that run north to south, through Kenya and Tanzania.

The Orogenic collisions resulted in forcing up deep sedimentary (marine) rock deposits, laid down over 800 million years ago. As a result of being thrust up and against each other, these sedimentary rocks were subsequently re-exposed to extreme heat and pressure becoming marble and graphite metamorphic material. Metamorphic materials, from Greek ‘Meta’ to ‘Change,’ and ‘Morph ‘to ‘Form,’ are the changes in form of pre-existing rock types into another beneath the Earth's surface.

These rocks were then folded over on each other, resulting in a foliated structure called Schist. Schists are crystalline rocks having a structure whereby layer upon layer are compounded one on top of the other being easily divided into slabs, slates or shale. Common ‘Schists’ are Mica schist, and Hornblendic schist: consisting chiefly of quartz with mica or hornblende and often feldspar.

These schists were subsequently re-exposed to more extreme heat and pressure. Quartz veins formed within the margins of these folds, and hot vanadium-rich hydrothermal liquids seeped into the spaces at the edges and hinges of the folds resulting in the development of Tanzanite crystals.

The mineral riches of the ‘Mozambique Orogenic Belt’ are relatively recent discoveries. Since the 1960s this vast mineral wealth of Tanzanite, ruby, fancy-colored sapphire, garnet, opal, and tourmaline has earned Tanzania notoriety as one of the world’s top gem sources with more than 50 different gem species being found there. Today, there is increasing interest in Tanzania's new gem deposits of transparent green Zoisite, scapolite, spinel, and zircon.
