The determining factors that give a Tanzanite gemstone its quality and value are made according to the rules of the "4 Cs": Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight.

In its natural state Tanzanite is termed as being rough. Once it has been cut it is termed as being faceted: a facet is one cut. A well-cut faceted gemstone reflects light back evenly across its surface area when held face up. The brilliance of a cut depends on the luster and the initial clarity of the gemstone: whether or not it had many visible inclusions. Tanzanite possesses a natural hardness of 6.5 – 7 out of 10 on the Moh’s Scale, with a ‘Vitreous’ glassy luster. However, Tanzanite has a perfect cleavage and is quite brittle due to this, therefore it should be worn with care.

A few centuries ago, a phenomenon within some gems was figuratively described as ‘Folia.’ Taken from the Latin, meaning ‘Leaves’, this described the visible layering of crystals within a gem's structure: Today, this structure is known as cleavage. This leaf-like layered formation, occurring within a gem during its re-crystallization, happens by the process of applied one-directional pressure from the surrounding host rocks. This causes platy, or lengthened crystals to grow with their long axis perpendicular to the direction of the exerted force. Imagine the wind blowing from one direction on a field of long grass, then reproduce the image thousands of times over, layered one on top of the other.

Because the pressure forms the crystals structure to lie in one directional plane, it creates a plane of cleavage, making the rock brittle. Slate is a good example of ‘Foliated’ rock having a strong cleavage, while marble which has had pressure exerted on it from all sides during its formation is a good example of ‘Non-Foliated’ rock. The cleavage defines how the rock should be cut: ‘Foliated’ rocks have to be cut perpendicular (at right angles) to their line of cleavage otherwise they will break in splinters, whereas as a ‘Non-Foliated’ can be cut at all angles.

Cutting standards for Tanzanite are strict, and not far removed from those of diamonds. In fact Tanzanite, like diamond, is the only colored gemstone to be part of an international sight holding community that restricts the sale of Tanzanite to a certain number of overseas buyers. These buyers have shares in the industry, and are guaranteed a certain amount of Tanzanite rough per year. These sight holders then process and cut their Tanzanite into a variety of shapes, with ovals, cushions and rounds being the most popular, emerald and trillion cuts are also available. Very rarely, Tanzanite is cut and polished ‘En Cabochon’: a dome cut with a flat bottom.

The objective of a good cutter is to optimize a gems beauty, desirability and value. A good, well-proportioned cut will bring out the true potential of a Tanzanite. Paramount is the skill of the cutter and his knowledge of positioning and angling facets, so light reflects internally to produce what is termed ‘Maximum Brilliance’.

As mentioned previously Tanzanite gems possess trichroic coloration, meaning that they can display three different colors when viewed at different angles, or when seen under different light sources. The reason for this is Tanzanite’s unique internal structure, the three different crystallographic axes that run the length and width of the Tanzanite crystals can exhibit blue, pink or purple. These axes are an important element for a cutter to consider when faceting, as a Tanzanite’s varying value is determined by it’s overall or ‘True’ color. The overall color you see through the table at the top of the gem results from the angles cut in conjunction with these axes.

Tanzanite at the blue end of the trichoic spectrum commands much higher prices than the purple or red tinged end. To pronounce the blue coloration a cutter must orientate the facets in conjunction with the blue color axis, which runs along the width rather than the length of the crystals axes. Cutting along the width axes will waste more of the Tanzanite rough crystal therefore augmenting the price per carat.
