Cut Facts

The determining factors that give a gemstone its quality and value are made according to the rules of the "4 Cs": Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight.

In its natural state Topaz is termed as being rough. Depending on its quality, gem standard Topaz can go one of two ways: highly included Topaz goes to be cut ‘En Cabochon’ or as beads, higher quality gem material goes to get faceted. Once it has been cut it is termed as being faceted: a facet is one cut. A well-cut faceted gemstone reflects light back evenly across its surface area when held face up.

The brilliance of a cut depends on the luster and the initial clarity of the gemstone: whether or not it had many visible inclusions: Topaz possesses a ‘Vitreous’ glassy luster, and is generally eye clean exhibiting a transparent to translucent aspect.

A Topaz’s cut comes down to personal preference and there are few limitations. However, in spite of its hardness of 8 on the Mohs’ scale, Topaz crystals in their natural state occur in elongated rhombic prisms with almost perfect cleavage. This cleavage, running the length of the gem, dictates that the cut must run at perpendicular angles. Topaz is therefore usually faceted into lengthened shapes such as emerald cuts, elongated ovals, pears and cushions following this structure. Nevertheless, the Blue variety of Topaz occurring in larger crystal sizes than any other of its colorful family members, can be found in nearly every shape and cut imaginable.

The objective of a good cutter is to optimize a gems beauty, desirability and value. Topaz is not one of the most expensive gems, so cutters can spotlight the beauty more than weight retention. Meaning that superior cutting, proportions and symmetry can be bought at very affordable prices. However, cutting standards are far more relaxed for colored gemstones than for diamonds, and most Topaz is faceted overseas producing what the trade calls ‘Native cuts.’ Dealers here often have to recut off-center, which produces asymmetrical gems. With this in mind it is advised that you stay away from malformed native cut Topaz, except if they are cheap enough to recut later in better proportions.
