However, when viewed with the eye alone fine Madagascan Blue Sapphire is almost indistinguishable from its Sri Lankan counterpart, so official certification through laboratory analysis is the only really accurate verification of origin.

This is especially important for gemstones that command premium prices; say for $20,000 or more. These gems are usually sent to a gem laboratory where their structure is examined to certify their authenticity. The laboratory procedure is similar to a DNA analysis, whereby the crystal structure acts like a fingerprint indicating its place of origin!

This procedure is conducted as a gemstone’s price varies dramatically according to what country it was sourced from: If a gem lab certificate identifies a Sapphire heralding from Kashmir,

or a ruby coming from Burma it’s price will be significantly higher than an identical gemstone without confirmed origin.

But unless you are considering investing a large sum of money in a gemstone, the only reason for a gem’s origin influencing your purchase should be for the pure exoticism that’s in its name.

After all, the origin is not important…the quality is!
