Mesa
Peridot occurs as individual grains and aggregates
of grains in basalt, which is about 3 to 35 meters thick.
The Peridot from the Mesa is recovered by drilling and blasting,
and also recovered after having been weathered out of
the basalt, in the gullies and canyons which lead down
the sides of the Mesa.
The Peridot grains are typically 6 to 13 millimeters in size. The
faceted gems are quite small and are generally about
1 carat in size; although 2 to 3 Carat flawless Peridots are not uncommon, gems over 5 carats and over are unusual.
