As far as clarity is concerned VS, eye-clean, Tanzanite is the standard. In terms of a top quality Tanzanite a VVS, nearly flawless, gemstone is the required prerequisite. Lower quality slightly included Tanzanite, SI1 and SI2; with minor inclusions being quite visible without magnification, is also available offering an equally attractive alternative at more affordable prices. Anything below this standard should be considered with care.

Tanzanite will rarely be completely free of inclusions as it derives its coloration, much like the corundum derivatives of sapphire and ruby, from trace elements present as impurities within the crystal structure. Tanzanite gets its coloration from vanadium-rich hydrothermal liquids which have seeped into the crystals structure throughout the process of development. These color giving mineral impurities are responsible for causing multitudes of fissures and tiny irregularities, or inclusions, inside the crystal as it forms.

Tanzanite possesses a ‘Vitreous’ luster and ranges from transparent to translucent in aspect.
